Fibernet celebrates the World Environment Day with energy efficiency as a standard
The World Environment Day, celebrated last week, supports initiatives that foster lifestyles and financial and business policies that support low carbon emissions, an improvement in energy efficiencies, the use of alternative sources and ecological consumption.
Fibernet, a Spanish company specialized in the design, supply and integration of fiber-optic transmission equipment, has been a long-time supporter of these objectives, successfully applying efficient environmental management criteria at all corporate levels.
A material example of this environmental management policy is Fibernet’s Data Center, located in Tres Cantos (Madrid). Antonio Gorrachategui, manager of Fibernet’s Data Center business area, states: "when we built it, we took energy efficiency and environmental impact into account". Considering the Ecodesign directive (2005/32/EC EuP), Fibernet established a series of ecological requirements that they had to comply in data center design: PUE compliance, environmental impact assessment, efficient equipment assessment according to manufacturers, environmental behavior improvement, energy or water consumption and energy development on demand. Gorrachategui adds: "Fibernet has an in-house control procedure by mediation process which is subject to the appropriate environmental controls, ISO 14001 and ITIL procedures".
One of the key points of this policy has been the company’s energy reduction policy, based on supporting fiber optics. Fibernet has created a product consisting in a smart solution for fiber dynamic allocation, suppressing copper. Antonio Gorrachategui explains: "this way we dissipate heat and therefore, consumption". Fibernet has worked with a university on a refrigeration model based on geothermics through the flow of a special fluid which is taken to the rack, permitting consumption saving. For new data centers, this is an easy to apply system, even though it depends on the geographic location.
