Fibernet reveals the trends that will set the future of data centers
Photonics will transform data center processes
In the last years we have witnessed great changes regarding data storage, processing and security. Just considering Internet traffic, we can appreciate that, since the beginning of the 90s, it has multiplied by 20 millions according to different sources from this sector. This trend will keep on growing and, according to Gartner, “the number of worldwide organizations that require new global network services keeps growing due to globalization and the recent adoption of cloud services; the cloud, applications such as video, machine-to-machine communications and Big Data are the engines for this increase”.
Since its incorporation, Fibernet has been especially focused on the market of data centers (DC) and on their connectivity needs. As a supplier of DC advanced connectivity solutions, the company has identified three trends that will set the future of data centers.
The first one is the massive consumption of fiber optic in large Data Centers, both for external connections with public networks or private and dedicated networks, and for data centers’ internal infrastructures. It is getting more and more necessary to have new real-time capacities and high-speed service provisioning, which involves considering wiring infrastructures as part of the configuration operators may do without any human intervention. Due to the new needs and the continuous technological changes, it is not always possible to foresee growth. Thinking about this evolution, Fibernet has designed smart wiring solutions with remote configurable parts to interconnect the different devices necessary to provide a new service. We can do it all thanks to the inclusion of photonic technology in the design, which permits to optimize space, consumption and, in short, costs.
Another key factor are the new bandwidth needed. We are already talking about 40-Gbps, 100-Gbps and 400 Gbps connections. These speeds are forcing us to adapt fiber-optic wiring to make them compatible with the new demands and have interfaces available that permit to transport the new standards of the market. As a leading manufacturer in optical transporter, Fibernet is working on new devices that facilitate high-speed connections adding new capacities to the existing ones and preserving compatibility with the equipment deployed with no need of new engineering. In addition, to facilitate coexistence between traditional solutions and future solutions, Fibernet supports solutions that adapt high-performance, cost-effective electro-optic or optic-optic signals. For this, it is also essential to photonic components in the architecture to respond to the new demands.
At the same time, we need to provide the ensemble with control, configuration, monitoring and security measures. This software will allow to monitor from one or several central points the situation of each and every part of the network in an accurate manner, supplying the new services through some simple instructions, measuring the activity parameters of the network regarding transport capacity, monitoring the quality status of all the wiring parts, detecting possible intrusion or tampering points in the client’s network or adding encryption to some services when necessary. The control layer will facilitate the interrelation with other data exchange and management platforms (SDN networks, etc.) so that clients have mechanisms at their disposal to manage all the resources of their data center in a centralized manner, providing a better operation and, as a result, a reduction in the OPEX. In short, Fibernet predicts that the future of data centers will be closely linked to photonics with the creation of a new photonic data center and that there will be a boost of designs equipped with fiber-optic networks and photonic technology to provide high-speed, real-time and security features to all networks.
